On the latest episode of Patriot Act, Hasan discusses America’s opioid epidemic and the recent spike in deaths due to one drug in particular: fentanyl. One of the most powerful drugs ever created, Fentanyl is a highly potent opiate that’s now the leading cause of overdose deaths in the United States. Hasan looks into its makers and distributors, from cartels to pharmaceutical companies like Insys and Teva, to discern how it has been able to wreak so much havoc on so many lives.

  • I get bullied by my aggressive patients to give opioid for any type of pain. I stay strong and decline it if whenever I suspect addiction and call addiction team.

  • What could possibly be the intended use for something stronger than Fentanyl? People with super cancer? And will this be as easy to synthesize?

  • It's not on the news, and it keeps getting worse. I’ve had friends and family die from prescribed drugs taken as directed as well as illicit drugs.

I've also been affected by deaths from withdrawal, suicide or illegal drugs, after prescribed meds for pain were cut off overnight, with no help to get patients through withdrawals.

Oodles of veterans received letters stating their prescribed pain meds were being stopped, they were being put into a “Hero program” (or something like that), with the military counting on them to be example for fellow veterans, who also got their meds stopped overnight.

The deaths are tragic, but no one else I've seen has assembled a comprehensive, honest review about ironic loopholes, and despicable repeated patterns.

I realize for some, laughing about how bad it is could be offensive.

I don't think his jokes were about the deaths, but how ridiculous and infuriating it is that those deaths even happened, with so many getting rich at the expense of those who were harmed or died.

History is teaching nothing to many legislators, the FDA, many doctors, as well as companies and systems that profit from drugs.

Look up how many rehabs there are and how most don't work unless patients stay for 3-6 months! What a racket! I have heard statistics that a 30-day rehab is worse than no rehab, it’s not enough time, and many overdose within a few days after discharge. There is a good VICE program about this.

I'm not laughing about the deaths. I don't think this comedian intended to do that either.

The news is controlled by major companies, so it is very hard to get the truth. If you focus on the facts in this video, it's a source of info that is hard to come by elsewhere.

I understand your perspective, and I'm sorry if it triggered you, as I've lost many as well. Still, getting the real news outweighed anything triggering for me.

    Wishing you well. ❤️‍🩹

  • As a geriatrics resident, fentanyl is super important to people with end stage kidney disease, and we have many of those. Unfortunately, I often find myself prescribing a 1/4 patch of Durogesic over 24 hours because anythjng over that would imply overdose.

  • I really, being a straight forward dumb, can not comprehend as to how a man can remain so fluent and focused at the same time for such a variety of subjects for such a long duration. Bravo, you are a wonder man and of course, a delight to watch and hear.

  • I cannot remain quiet about this! You’ve done a one-sided disservice to some of us, who did NOT, I repeat: DID NOT become “addicted” to either one,: Oxycontin, or Fentanyl! In 2000, due to severe, intractable Back Pain, I was at first placed on Oxycontin. Since I did not like its side-effects, I told my Doctor (a Pain Clinic Doctor) I needed to get off it.
He gave me a sample of the Acqtic (spelling?) Lollypop, (mine didn’t look like the one you showed). Used responsibly, it DID relieve some of my pain, effectively, but my Insurance wouldn’t cover it, so we decided to try the “Duragesic” Patches.
I was on Duragesic Patches for more or less 8 years; the pain wouldn’t stop, and eventually, I was practically crippled by the pain (MIND YOU, THIS WAS NOT CANCER PAIN). I’d been seeing multiple Doctors, (mostly Orthopedists), due to what appeared to be other symptoms, such as my ankle, or my wrist sprain, or knee pain…; definitely in pain, for example. Desperate to find out what was wrong, and deal with it, I was accused by some as “drug seeking”, when in reality I was in agony. I became so overmedicated, I did not expect to live past my 50s. In 2008, my regular Rheumatologist wasn’t available, and seeing one of his Associates I’d never seen before, w/in 5 minutes she casually asked me: “Did you know you have Fibromyalgia?” I argued I did not; didn’t fit the profile, etc. It took her 9 months to convince me I had Fibro, which to me translated to a “Life-Sentence of excruciatingly-difficult-to-manage pain.” So, until mid-2009, I remained in denial, and still on Fentanyl.
Then, ça. August 2009, having found 2 patches missing inside my Prescribed 2 boxes of Duragesic Patches, following through with it, w/ Pharmacy, w/ Doctor, then, with the Company’s Quality Control Nurse, they eventually sent a letter to my Doctor calling me a “liar.” I was LIVID! When, the time came to obtain my Prescription for September, 2009—and fed-up with all the very difficult rigamarole, required to obtain the Prescription, at the right time—I called my Rheumatologist, asked her how would we Dx, and Treat Fibro.
We discussed my options, and I (VOLUNTARILY) Shredded my September 2009 Rx, for the Fentanyl patches, and went off them, COLD TURKEY.
Simultaneously, My Rheumatologist told me about a Non-Opioid Medicine which addresses specifically the way Fibro makes one’s life so miserable, called Neurontin, (aka: Gabapentin). I was scared, but decided to do it.
She placed me initially on a massive dose of Gabapentim 600Mg, 4 times/day, and I KNOWING FULL WELL HOW OUR BRAIN’s “OPIOID RECEPTORS” WOULD ACT, minus the Fentanyl, went on a 45-day at home Regimen of Meditation, Quiet Music, taking Valerian and Dandelion Teas (anti-anxiety, and a mild Sedative that they are), 4-5 times/day, each time I was hit by an “Anxiety attack,” (I was NOT about to give in, to those “Opioid Receptors,” in my brain. I also slept a lot. (Thankfully, I understood the science behind the “opioid receptors” in the brain, and deal with them, accordingly).
Before then, I’d been a Performer, (synthesizers, and piano), and during the prior 10 years, had lost my Music, my Marriage, my ability to function w/o help; also found myself in a wheelchair, for 5 years, since i couldn’t stand up very long, for anything.
Realizing I’d never play again, I also got rid of my music equipment, and and did not play the piano, for over 10 years…
Within a mere two (2) weeks of getting off the Opioid pain Medication, and being on Neurontin, (for Fibro), and wearing a far smaller back brace, than what I’d been previously wearing, a “Miracle” happened!
I was able to sit 5 minutes, at the piano, then 10, then 30, etc., the pain now completely manageable (WITHOUT ANY PAIN MEDICATION)…
I’m now, in my late-60s, with nearly no pain, I’ve regained my Life (minus my music, which I quit performing in 2018).
I’ve learned to manage the Fibro, through Neurontin, Exercising, Studying (Sanskrit), Eating right; managing Stress through Lifestyle changes, and Meditation, as well as getting enough Sleep, I manage it.
Also, since Fentanyl did have so many other side-effects, affecting every aspect of my body, most, but not all, of those problems subsided, once I got off it.
Getting off the other meds, which were introduced to combat the side-effects, I’d also gained an enormous amount of weight, (from their side-effects), reaching 260Lbs., by 2008. So, concurrent with getting off the Fentanyl, I worked with all my other Doctors, to slowly diminish their dosages, until, in time, by 2020, I came down to remaining on just ONE single med (Neurontin), and lifestyle and nutrition changes, I did shed 100Lbs, in a twelve year period.
Ultimately, having overcome all this, I do resent I couldn’t find out sooner, from the correct Doctor, regarding having Fibromyalgia, perhaps I wouldn’t have lost my music, marriage, and for a time, even my clear, sharp mind.
Most of all, I wouldn’t have had an entire Decade of my life, in useless care by Doctors, lacking enough knowledge of Fibro.
LET ME BE CLEAR THOUGH, Regarding Fentanyl, Oxycontin, etc.:
I do not resent those Meds having been used on me, by professionals who didn’t know better (about diagnosing and treating Fibro).
Regarding Opioid Epidemic, there are always some kind of drug epidemic, each decade having its own favorite drug epidemic, I do not know the truth about Doctors being “pushed” to use the Fentanyl, and Oxycontin, too liberally, on their (as you say) “Non-Cancer” patients.
I WAS in excruciatingly-intractable pain, (EVEN while on Fentanyl, there was much “Breakthrough pain”), but that’s another story.
MY POINT: NOT EVERYONE who have been on Fentanyl ended up addicted to this drug! My dosage on the patch was a massive 100Mcg/72-hrs/3-day patch, I’d wear on my back (Caregivers would come, to apply them); most of the time the patches would actually slide off, anyway, then, I’d be in agony, until the next patch would be applied.
I can’t accept I may be the only non-cancer patient who successfully not only got off Fentanyl, after nearly 9 years on it, and didn’t die, of an overdose, but also, overcame the effects and damage this drug did effect on one’s body systems.
I’ve been told I should write a book about it, but—since that was such a (also psychologically) painful time in my life, I actually shredded most of my files, from that time, so, I cannot properly document anything. (I’m not about to write a “Fairy-Tale!”
I’d love to be able to forget it, but then, finding Videos like yours, I couldn’t keep my mouth shut!
And BTW, How can you live with yourself, making fun of other people’s misery, death, and addiction?
This is NOT a “funny” matter!
Moreover, you were also just one-sided, and uninformed on several aspects of the sourcing of the Pharmaceutical Fentanyl. My Patches were indeed called Duragesic Patches” but they were manufactured and sold by Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, not Johnson & Johnson, or the other ones.
(There’s more to what you said, but this is enough).
    I was extremely Lucky!
    Not everyone was so lucky!
Quit making fun of it! it ain’t “funny!”
