In this powerful and deeply personal episode of Club Shay Shay, Shannon Sharpe sits down with Grammy-nominated rapper, producer, actor, and cultural thought leader David Banner for a raw, vulnerable, and wide-ranging conversation. From his roots in Jackson, Mississippi, to his rise as a pioneer of Southern hip-hop and a visionary in media and activism, Banner opens up like never before.
From selling mixtapes at Krogerโs to producing hits for T.I., Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Maroon 5, and more, Banner recounts his rise in the music industry and the painful realization that fame isnโt what it seems.
He reflects on how hip-hop wasnโt just an escape, but an education and empowerment. Inspired by Brand Nubian and The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Banner stopped eating pork in the 8th grade and began a lifelong journey toward purpose and spiritual grounding. โRap taught me something,โ he says, recalling how music, and later, therapy, helped him confront childhood trauma, grief, and the weight of being a voice for the people.
Banner speaks candidly about battling depression, the heartbreak of the music industry, and the painful realization that fame is often a lie. โI loved music, and music broke my heart,โ he admits. But instead of folding, he evolved. Now the CEO of Banner Vision, heโs produced campaigns for Gatorade, Disney, Marvel, and acting in films โplaying a god in an upcoming superhero movie. His mission? Use his platform to rebuild what the industry wonโt.
He opens up about his faith, his genius-level reading skills as a child, and how Samuel L. Jackson gave him life-changing acting lessons on the set of Black Snake Moan. He reflects on his HBCU experience at Southern University, corporate racism, tough conversations, politics, and even why he built his grandmother a house as the first thing he did with his music money.
From deep conversations with Erykah Badu and LL Cool J, to producing “Rubberband Man” and learning from Jay-Z, to giving insight on Nellyโs โTip Drillโ and the truth about how money is made in music, this episode is a masterclass in growth, purpose, and legacy.
He challenges peers to invest in their communities: โI invest in me. I put my money back into what I stand for.โ He shares wisdom passed down from his father and lessons from losing friends to gang violence.
The conversation digs deep into spirituality, accountability, masculinity, and systemic racism in both America and corporate culture. Banner pulls no punches: โHollywood is no different from America. The police just took the hoods off.โ He urges honesty in our communities and calls for an end to performative shock when abusers or injustices come to light.
In one of the most moving moments, Banner opens up about being tired, not just physically, but emotionally, from pouring so much into Black culture.
He honors his hero, Ice Cube, and praises Ryan Coogler and the movie Sinners for reconnecting African Americans with lost spirituality, and celebrates Shannon Sharpe for defying the odds and doing it his way.
As the episode closes, Banner leaves us with this charge: โJust shoot it. Keep clicking, keep believing. God conspires with those who believe.โ Whether heโs talking to LL Cool J, scoring for T.I., or building legacy from the South to the screen, David Banner is proof that faith, fight, and freedom are the true measures of success.
This is an episode that you donโt want to miss!

Very inspirational episode.

David Banner is so expressive. He is articulate and so inspiring! Deepest conversation Iโve heard on this platform. This Mississippi woman loves and respects David Banner!
Banner talk too much
Banner yooooo get at me! I feel you when you know you are here to do something or somethiiiiings. Bigger than yourself I think you and my husband should speak I would love for you to talk to him, he's fighting to come home in LA county, he's a Marine but he has def spiritually been growing into the King he is, and I think he also has a lot to say too ๐

๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ
I needed to hear this message David respect brother ๐๐พ
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode.
Mississippi stand up ๐ฅ
People want the energy, feel, and look of our culture but not the messages and emotions that we convey through it
I dont think people realized what Banner just said " I AM great! It just hurt that my people don't know how great I AM"…
That's right David, stay on Shannon's bumper. Get him right.
So wish I could talk to David Banner about being from the south because like him i disliked me dad untill my 20's and didnt understand him and why he was they the he was and etc man it just goes to show how bad the south had it
David David. There is a spirit man in all of us. We have a choice to choose right from wrong/good from bad (evil).
King & titan inspiration. I need to watch all of this.
The Rap God Casual talked to me on a serious point hinted by David Banner though not really talked about on this one.
Bout to go play the Lonely Man's theme..
I dont understand Davids dad advice? Be an invisible woman in a skirt? Huh he's called a woman because he wasn't feeling well emotionally and as if being a woman is something to be ashamed of being. Someone please explain this to me
I hope Shannon really starts listening and see who really has his back
legend.
Crazy this aint had a million views yet๐คฆ๐ฟโโ๏ธwow, this real as it gets here! DB a real one frfr๐ซก๐ฏ
I love how he spoke support and life into Shannon and everyone who watched this. Shannon did a great job as always of taking it all in and having a great conversation. Very engaging.
This is a amazing interview. In a few years I will be on your show. You have my support. We will weather this storm together as a family .
D B, some things are better left to one's self. Shannon didn't need you on his show to make him! DON'T DO THAT! STAY IM YOUR LANE!… HE'S OK! ๐ฎโค
๐ฎ
Shout out to you Shannon Sharp ๐๐พ… Continue to stand on your 10!!!!!!โค
48:16 thatโs crazy cause i hope i live long enough lol. i definitely donโt wanna live forever
50:17 iโm definitely telling my kid santa isnโt real ๐
This the one unc
This was by far the best interview of the entire series. It was honest, real, and to the point.
This interview donโt get enough respect or the views it deserves
David dropped some gems about that prayer topic that a lot of people probably didnโt pick up. We canโt keep holding on to that Bible like itโs golden, like itโs the key, etc. God is inside of every last one of us and we can do what we want with that.
Southern University in the house ๐
For the record, GOD is Not everything, HE created everything.
Iโll love to see Charleston White & David Banner together on this show
David Banner โค
I love the show, but Banner shoulda took this to Cam Newton, first. I'm wondering if there was a lot cut out because Shannon has no rebuttal when Banner gets deep, PAUSE. He just going to the next subject. But Banner and Cam woulda been dissecting those subjects and possibly sending tears (Like him and Jonathan Majors) (One of the best interviews, Ever). But Shannon just saying, RIGHT, and going to the next subject. I truly hope he isn't that simple. But we seein his track record,,,sooo๐คท๐พโโ๏ธ๐คท๐พโโ๏ธ๐คท๐พโโ๏ธ
This interview was very enlightening David Banner we are not going to leave you or Shannon we need you guys God bless โค
As an older southern girl, I co-sign all that!
I donโt have any sympathy for fool. The old people use to say if you canโt listen you gonna feel. This was his lesson to learn, only time will tell if he did learn or not.
This is BY FAR my favorite interview of Club Shay Shay!!! The timing couldn't have been at a better time. This was served more as therapy & a history lesson rooted in social understanding featuring divine insight. Mr. Banner IS that light!!!
Bro let Shannon talk tho dont keep interrupting him g
