  • General McChrystal will be my first choice for President or VP to bring America back from the brink. He just has everything a good leader should have: intelligence, wide knowledge of human and world affairs, empathy, ethical patriotism. He's the complete package. One should just hope he has the energy and inclination before age takes him out of contention.

  • As a 24 year veteran who served during the deployments between 2003 and 2006, I thoroughly enjoyed your sit down with GEN McCrystal. I long for the days we had leaders worth looking up to and fighting along side with. As a DOD Civilian for the past 17 years, I find it difficult to continue going through the lessons that were never learned with this new generation of Warfighters. Thank you for the great conversation and reminder of the values that guide us all.

  • A lot of my early life revolved around the military. And one thing I learned about officers was they have a different commitment to the military and military objectives than non career enlisted like myself. It's the same as the different between worker bees and managers in the corporate world. Management first serves corporate goals and shareholder value, they have made the bargain to set aside human values to get the pay and power that their management position brings to them. Officers in the military have the same buy in. They can and in reality, have to, set aside some of their humanity in order to attain the position of power that being an officer gives to them. Don't get me wrong, enlisted GIs can do and have done horrible things, like the torture Hasan mentions at Camp Nama. But you have to look at who was in charge at the tim. Where does the buck stop, General?

  • you say your channel is about what you don't know, but today you showed me you know about this topic. it's been wrong and us American's have been wrong too many times. We can't claim America has a valuable character when America has never displayed it when it matters the most. I think it may be time for us to accept that we need to earn the respect of other countries and not turn to violence when threats become present.

  • This was a great interview. While Hassan wasn't as hard on him as I wished at times, Hasan did pick up a lot of nuance, and our society needs a lot more of that.

  • After a couple of questions it was clear General McChrystal wasn't going to say anything definitive about Trump so its weird Hasan continued to try and force the issue for the first 8 minutes of the podcast. Like just pivot at that point

  • OK, the General left out something very important in the torture the terrorist scenario. Since torture is illegal (as well as immoral) would the student be willing to go to prison for a substantial number of years whether the torture acquired the needed info or not. First there should be personal consequences in the scenario for their actions. Second, there is no guaranty that the info acquired through torture can be acted on. It may be misinformation, it may be out of date, it may be acquired too late to act on and the person being tortured may just die before giving up what you want to know.
People in power often talk about being willing to make the "hard decisions" but those so-called hard decisions very seldom come with personal consequences to actually make them hard. The military and intelligence agencies are filled with people willing to die for their country. I've often wondered how many would suffer prison and disgrace for their country because that is what the "rule of law" required.

  • 20:30 " usa military does a pretty good job of talking about rule of law, better than almost any military I have seen"
As EU, first things that came to mind is a) Torture b) wikileaks

I mean sure if you compare yourself to Russia, middle east or worse but USA comes from Europe, are there really no more ethical military there?

  • I wonder sometimes if they go over their conversation beforehand. I mean, otherwise listing off a string of NBA players to someone who likely doesn’t know who Hasan is talking about (especially after Rodman) gets less funny. Also, why would you make a joke that your guest is likely not to understand? I mean, it’s not made at his expense, but just adjacent when the person is likely not in on the joke. Then they either have to look at you blank faced, or fake they know who the hell you’re talking about. He may be a huge NBA fan, but unless you know beforehand it seems like a bad idea. It’s what I mean by comedians make mid interviewers until they learn to dial back the joke machine.

  • By the time we finish self flagellating over our mistakes from the war on terror, Russia will conquer Ukraine and China will be reeducating the Taiwanese. I doubt we’ll ever see American intervention ever again but I am sure as hell that going forward more innocents will suffer. We’re going from accepting too many false positives with when we intervene to too many false negatives when we choose not to intervene.
